Overview :

In an era when most technology based products follow a path of ever-increasing capability and reliability while simultaneously reducing costs, launch vehicles today are little changed from those of 40 years ago. SpaceX aims to change this paradigm by developing a family of launch vehicles which will ultimately reduce the cost and increase the reliability of space access by a factor of ten. …

SpaceX - Full-Time | Job date : 07-06-2018

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

Our EMI/EMC team works to ensure our avionics hardware will perform when integrated into a complex and delicate system of both sensitive and high-power avionics that must operate through some of the harshest electromagnetic environments imaginable. The team performs exhaustive avionics analysis, design, and test at the board, unit, subsystem, and system levels with work that reaches out to almost all of the departments at SpaceX. As such, they work closely with a significant number of teams within the company, most amounting to: the hardware design teams, production teams, structures teams, propulsion teams, launch, and mission management teams. They are one of the few teams that interface with almost all aspects of the company as well as getting significant hands on time with flight hardware. They play a crucial role in the development of our systems particularly as we advance our efforts towards satellites and creating safe, reliable, inexpensive, and innovative systems that push the boundaries in size and mass.

Design SpaceX products to survive electromagnetic environmental effects
Set requirements based on physics rather than industry standards – a much deeper understanding of electromagnetic environmental effects is critical for this position
Ensure that designs meet the EMI/EMC requirements that have been set
Interface with, teach, and set requirements with various design teams all around the company
Perform and teach electromagnetic compatibility design and analysis
Perform analysis and design relating to: effects of space plasma, lightning, surface/bulk/triboelectric charging, circuit grounding architectures, structural bonding, circuit isolation, transfer impedance, shielding effectiveness, effects of radiated/conducted emissions & susceptibility, near field/far field electric fields, welding, corona, computational electromagnetics, etc.
Design and perform tests to validate the analyses and designs from the previous bullet
Write documents and control plans as needed
Troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level
Operate a variety of EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment
Independently perform verifications and document results in a clear, precise, and complete manner
Support engineering management with confidence; think creatively – question the status quo, while following documentation and maintaining prescribed quality standards.

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or other engineering discipline
7+ years of E3 work experience, including EMI/EMC requirements, analysis, design, and testing

Advanced degree in electrical engineering, physics, or other engineering discipline
Previous work experience with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, NASA-STD-4003 documentation
Knowledge of electromagnetic environmental effects on space vehicles and launch vehicles, including, effects of space plasma, on-orbit charging, triboelectric charging, grounding/bonding/shielding, design for low radiated emissions, HIRF, lightning, electromagnetic field coupling, Maxwell's equations, image charge/current, and lumped element modeling
Knowledge of materials and their electrical properties including paint, anodize, magnaplate, nickel plate, alodine, surface finish, electrical conductivity, volume resistivity, surface resistance
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting EMI/EMC events from board to system level
Demonstrated experience with NASA-HDBK-4001, DO-160, MIL-STD-1541, SSP 30237, SSP 30238, SMC-S-008 documentation
Previous work experience with reading, interpreting and following: circuit schematics, PCB layouts, engineering drawings, BOMs, cable harnesses, wiring schematics, interface diagrams, layout drawings, mechanical drawings and CAD software
Strong knowledge of plasma/space physics, dielectric breakdown, RF principals, RF engineering
Experience preferred in fast-paced work environment with production/flight hardware
Able to adapt to constantly changing work assignments
Excellent concentration and attention to detail with outstanding work efficiency and accuracy
Experience writing a proper EMC control plan
Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
