Description

The lead valves technician is responsible for leading a crew of technicians in the assembly and testing of mission critical spacecraft and launch vehicle components. This is a dynamic position that requires the flexibility to work on different systems, the ability to troubleshoot anomalies, and the ability to work autonomously to defined schedules while keeping safety and quality at the forefront of everything that is done.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Use product and process expertise to train new technicians on team processes, understanding the resources required to meet delivery targets and work with engineering teams to improve the products and process on the testing they are responsible for. Aid in development of testing processes, tooling and training to improve product yield and labor efficiency.
  • Identify and execute actions to ensure the valves factory is completing testing at desired rates on each component assigned to the team while ensuring work is performed according to approved procedures, specifications and test instructions, as well as being within compliance of all safety protocols at all times. Set the daily operating rhythm in the test area to ensure sub-level and final delivery commitments are made on time.
  • In addition to leadership contributions, continue to provide significant hands-on individual productivity to test activities to ensure delivery targets are met. The proportion of time spent on individual contributions versus setting the team up for success will vary situationally, and leads are expected to communicate closely with area supervisors and managers to ensure a clear expectation in their area is met.
  • Work with engineering teams and production management to balance second and third level priority requests with top priorities for the team, updating and communicating clearly with valve factory customers to ensure clear direction and priorities, and to accurately maintain factory schedules, progress charts, and expected completion dates.
  • Ensure seamless shift handovers and prompt shift starts through clear pass down communication and direct interaction working with opposite shift counterparts, lining work up ahead of time for the crew each day.
  • Minimize production interruptions through coordinating with engineering and other support organizations.
  • Minimize and eliminate quality defects through training, tracking, and executing corrective actions on all escapes and workmanship errors.
  • Maintain tools and product specific process kits in the test area, ensuring calibration is up to date and tools are available in serviceable condition. Monitor consumable usage and ensure consumables are adequately stocked at all times. Conduct 5S audits in the area and develop actions to maintain a clean, well-organized work area.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 4 years of experience working in a detailed mechanical assembly and/or test environment.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with pressure testing and all safety precautions on low/med/and high-pressure systems.
  • Knowledge of pressure, temperature and flow measurement devices; mechanical and electrical systems; and propulsion engines.
  • Experience working with detailed mechanical assemblies.
  • Aircraft mechanic airframe & power plant (A&P) license.
  • Knowledge of aerospace flight hardware policies.
  • Strong mathematical, computer, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently or as part of a team to meet aggressive schedules.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to work significant overtime.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in tight spaces.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. unassisted.
