As a Supplier Development Engineer at SpaceX you will have the opportunity to utilize your knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop novel solutions at the cutting edge of space technology.  You will work on hardware that will produce vehicles to deliver satellites into earth orbit, ferry humans to and from the international space station, and ultimately extend humanity’s reach beyond the earth and moon.  You will own the relationship between SpaceX engineers and suppliers, and take full responsibility for creating a supply base that is capable of meeting our challenging demands.


  • Identify, assess, and develop suppliers to autonomously perform at high levels of quality, rapid speed, and low cost on outsourced tooling jobs
  • Integrate with engineering teams to support the analysis and disposition of supplier non-conformances
  • Resolve supplier product nonconformances and focus actions on the root cause
  • Assure supplier compliance to procedures and assist in supplier corrective actions and resolution to audit findings
  • Execute successful work transfer when required, including the buildup of supplier facility infrastructure, the transfer of product knowledge, and the development of equipment required to satisfy engineering requirements
  • Develop and maintain the documentation necessary, including external supplier documentation, to ensure consistent manufacture and traceability of products
  • Use project management skills and tools to investigate and lead projects for alternate component technologies for reduced cost or improved quality and reliability
  • Qualify supplier inspection capabilities to move defect detection ability upstream
  • Develop and deploy tools to provide real-time visibility into supplier capacity to enable smart sourcing decisions
  • Generate and execute creative solutions to mitigate quality and schedule impact when supplier problems occur


  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, or systems engineering
  • 2 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment


  • Master of Science degree in aerospace, mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, or systems engineering
  • Lean manufacturing certification
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality systems and requirements
  • Experience working with suppliers resolving engineering and manufacturing problems
  • Strong familiarity with root cause analysis tools
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly
  • Experience with capacity modeling, process mapping and fault analysis
  • Pareto analysis, root cause and corrective action experience
  • Experience performing process failure mode effects analyssis (PFMEA)
  • CAD experience
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) experience


  • Ability to work directly with the hardware on the floor and being comfortable stooping, bending, and standing
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
